New records: how is the coal industry developing in Kazakhstan?
Coal mining and processing remain strategically important for the country’s economy. Last year, almost 118 million tons of hard coal was produced in Kazakhstan. This is one of the industry’s biggest figures in the last decade. Coal remains a major item of domestic export and, most importantly, strategically important for the energy industry. About 70% of all electricity and heat to the homes of Kazakhs comes from coal-fired power plants.
The main producer of coal is the Shubarkol Komir field (Karaganda region) with a little more than 12.5 million tons per year
“Shubarkol Komir” includes two sections – Central and Western, where coal is mined in an open-pit way. In 2022, a record amount of coal production was achieved here – 12.76 million tons. The domestic coal market in Kazakhstan is small. As a result, the share of deliveries to the country’s communal energy market was 34.8%, to the industrial energy market – 13%, but 52.2% of all products were exported. The geography of coal deliveries from “Shubarkol” covers, for example, Switzerland and Great Britain.
By the way, Shubarkol coal has special characteristics. Due to its high caloric content and low ash content, it belongs to environmentally friendly energy carriers.
